The list of GATE paper codes and valid paper combinations is available on the GATE's 2026 official website. Candidates can also check their GATE paper codes in the information brochure.
This year, GATE 2026 is organised by IIT Guwahati. The GATE exam dates 2026 are February 7, 8, 14, and 15.

The GATE 2026 will have 30 paper codes, covering wide range of disciplines including engineering, science, life sciences, humanities, and architecture.

- Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA)
- Geomatics Engineering (GE) and
- Environmental Science (ES)
Candidates are advised to go through the GATE paper codes carefully before adding their paper choices.

The GATE 2026 general aptitude section comprises of the following -
- Verbal aptitude - Basic English Grammar (Tenses, Articles, Adjectives, Prepositions, Conjuctions, Verb-Noun Agreement and other parts of speech)
- Basic Vocabulary - Words, Idioms, and Phrases in context, reading and comprehension, and narrative sequencing.

Candidates can add the two-paper combination option at the time of filling the GATE application form. Candidates will be allowed to opt for at least two papers - One primary and one secondary subject.

The XH, XL, and XE in the GATE 2026 exam stands for the following -
- XH - Humanities and Social Sciences
- XL - Life Sciences
- XE - Engineering Sciences

The GATE exam pattern consists of three types of questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Choice Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). The test papers will be in English. Each GATE 2026 paper is for a total of 100 marks, General Aptitude (GA) is common for all papers (15 marks), and the rest of the paper covers the respective test paper syllabus (85 marks). Moreover, the GATE Score is utilized for public sector undertaking recruitments and MTech admission.
