In order to complete a three-year Bachelor's degree/PG programme, students must study at least 15-20 different subjects and pass a comprehensive exam in each subject. A thesis project in the student's major area of study must be completed by the end of the third year of study. Hi Inder,
If you don't want to pursue engineering, you can give UPSC and RRB exams for non-technical departments in Indian Railways. If you get a good rank, you might opt for the Indian Railways Traffic Service (IRTS), or the Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS).

You can choose any course and any degree. It is said that if you choose a subject which comes under optional subjects in UPSC Mains exams you don't have to spend more time in preparation for the exams.

You can choose any stream as UPSC only asks you to be a graduate, might it be in any stream of your choice, but if your goal is straight and you only want to become an IAS officer, you can prefer humanities and do BA. Along with it, you can start preparing for IAS.

It would be an added factor, if you prefer engineering as engineering students and graduates can directly appear for the SSB interview instead of clearing UPSC CDS exams. Also, 60 students from engineering and 60 students from non-engineering background are selected. Mechanical and Civil will be a great advantage.
