Hello Ganesh,
It mainly depends upon your interest. You may choose an arts subject, literature, engineering, science or medicine. After all, you will have all these as optional subjects in the Main examination. Therefore, take up the subject you like or find easy.
Always be in touch with the syllabus of the exam. If you have a clear understanding of how the exam goes, you are half ready for the examination. Go through the past five years exam question papers.

For competitive exams - Language section - the emphasis is more on grammar (60%) and literature (40%). It is advisable to read best seller and popular literature. Also, refer to previous years question papers.
