You should choose which course you're taking the test for. There is B.Sc and DNS in nautical science, BE in marine engineering, naval architecture, and few MBA programs. The first two will lead you to work on ship out at sea. The latter ones will get you office jobs somewhere.

You can get nautical Science B.Sc. and maritime Science B.Sc. In the IMU campus. But only apply if your vision is 6/6. Or else opt for B.Tech marine and B.Sc. Shipbuilding and wait till 2nd or 3rd counselling. You might have a chance if you have any reservation criteria else give it a try. You have very great chance to get into this institute with this rank. Attend the counselling and choose your options appropriately. Try the Shiksha College Predictor for better analysis.

Yes, surely there is a chance of getting lower IMU colleges but apart from it, some extremely good private colleges with sponsorship it's going to be for you at the time of graduating as in Marine field recession has hit so a good advice is for a sponsorship from private colleges like TMI, Induri, Samundra and Anglo-Eastern. These colleges are extremely good. Apart from a few good important colleges like IMUCET Kolkata, if under 200, your friend is not going to get it. Good luck.
