International students whose first language is not English are required by Northern Illinois University (NIU) to demonstrate their English competency. Tests like the Duolingo English Test, IELTS, and TOEFL are acceptable. IELTS demands a minimum score of 6.0, whereas the TOEFL iBT requires a minimum of 71 for undergraduate programs. Higher scores are usually required for graduate programs, depending on the program. Students who complete the academic requirements but require further English language instruction through their English Language Institute may be eligible for conditional admission to NIU.

A. Japanese language courses have been established in India since the early 1950s. It was the Ministry of Defence which began offering the course in their affiliated School of Foreign Languages in 1954 and a Japanese department was set up, making it the first University in the nation to offer a course in the Japanese language. The University of Delhi followed suit and established its Japanese Studies Centre in 1969, the University of Pune established a course in 1977 and Jawaharlal Nehru offered a doctorate in the Japanese language in 1982.
