The universities can certainly verify the details in the recommendation letters from the respective recommender. That is why they even ask for contact details of the recommender. The LORs also specify these contact details so that university can connect with the recommender if they wish to ask for any clarification regarding your profile.

Although universities may not provide any specific word counts for LORs, it is advised to create a letter of recommendation for around 300-500 words. The LOR must have 4-5 paragraphs, including introduction and conclusion. At least 2-3 traits must be highlighted along with suitable examples to improve the credibility of the information. If you are applying for any specific specialisation such as electrical engineering and you refer to lor samples for MS in electrical engineering, you are advised to not blindly follow the word count and limit your response to a one A4 size page for an LOR.

While applying to a university in the USA, you may come across the requirement of 2-3 LORs, specifically from your college professors. Few universities can even ask for two academic LORs and one professional LOR. Therefore, it is important to check the LOR requirements beforehand and approach the selected recommenders well before the time. Connecting with recommenders near the application deadline will leave you with very less time to discuss the points you wish to highlight in the LOR. As an MBA programme is quite a sought-after program, every document, including the LOR must be carefully prepared. Below are few things you must not include in the recommendation letter which can jeopardize your application:

  1. The recommender must not include weaknesses or negative points, unless asked by the university. Incase the recommender mentions a weakness, he must show it in appositive light, mentioning how are you working on it.
  2. The LOR must not have too many traits which seems too good to be true. It is better to include less traits with instances to make it more realistic.
  3. Avoid putting excessive technical details in the MBA LOR;

Yes, in case your manager is unavailable, you can get a professional LOR for MBA from your colleague. However, the colleague must be senior to you in designation to recommend you. In addition, it would be better if they have worked with you closely in a professional capacity. This will ensure that your LOR for MBA can have the best impact, despite not being from your manager/supervisor.

If you do have professional experience, especially related to management or mentorship, getting a sample MBA recommendation letter from supervisor or manager could be very beneficial. In the LOR, your superiors can mention about your potential as a future manager and all positive traits that you possess. It is even better if your managers can talk about your expertise in managing people, situations or tasks with examples of the same. Even if you do not have any work experience, your academic recommenders can talk about your management aptitude and skills.
