Yes, you can but it requires robotics knowledge as well Mechatronics can be understood to come from two words - Mecha, which stands for Mechanics and tronics, which stands for Electronics. Thus, Mecahtronics is the integration of Mechanical, Electrical and Software systems to make intelligent and more productive machines. Robotics simply is one of the applications of Mecahtronic knowledge. It involves the integration of all the components of Mechatonics systems to design machines that can act like humans. If Mechatronics is a Multi National Company, then Robotics is just one of the products of that company. Some Institutes offer combined courses such as Mecahtronics and Robotics with specialisation in Robotics and some may offer these courses as different individual courses.

In simple words, all robotic systems are mechatronic systems. But, all mechatronic systems aren't robotic systems.
Mathematically, robotics is the subset of mechatronics set.
Robotics is a specific branch of mechatronics that requires the knowledge of,
Dynamic system modeling and analysis
Control engineering
Signal conditioning
Sensors and actuators
Hardware interface
Path programming
Kinematics and so on.
As you can see, even a mechatronic system requires the above-mentioned elements. However, it differs from a robotic system in terms of functionality and the use case. For example, coffee vending machine, airplane, washing machine, automobile, etc. are all mechatronic systems, which belong to different use cases. However, robots are unique in terms of their functionality and use case.
