While there have been a number of writers who are also medical professionals, a good grounding in the basic sciences - equal to the General Science Minor needed for someone with a Liberal Arts Degree to pass the MCAT and complete Medical School - and a strong sense of curiosity as well as brutal self honesty, would likely be enough for you to be able to understand most of the medical information you would be writing about. A bit of self education on any given topic would then bring you to the point where you could converse with all but the most esoteric sub specialists, if not with ease, but with a strong possibility that you would understand what they were trying to say.
