What you have to do is check out whether you are ready to face IIT or NIT entrance exams, if answer is yes, then go for it. Choose next IIT classes in your city give the entrance exam of that institute. Coaching is the only way to prepare yourself for IIT. So, Be ready to face challenges. Study hard. NIT stands for National Institute of Technology. These were formerly called Regional Engineering Colleges. Though not as good as IITs, they are also excellent institutes for Engineering. As far as the difference between IIT and NIT in terms of educational programs is concerned, both stand at the same position.

GATE is required for higher studies like Masters in engineering (M.Tech). For B.Tech in NITs or IIITs, you must get a good rank in JEE Mains and Advanced or you require JEE Mains and Advanced for B.Tech in NITs and IIITs.
