NITs offer better salary packages than most of the engineering colleges in India.
The package depends more on the reputation of the company and the knowledge of the candidate.
The average package ranges from 6-10 lakhs per annum for an NIT.

I think, in any NIT, you will get no. of opportunities to show your extra skills. By the way NIT Trichy, VNIT, NIT Surathkal, SVNIT, NIT Rourkela are good for mechanical. Try your best for IITs though.

To clear the exam, there are particular cut off marks that vary every year. But to get a good and a top NIT, your marks should be at least above 250 so that you won't miss out the chances whatever be the cut off.

The admission into NITs is based on the ranks In JEE main exam. The JEE main exam is conducted only once a year and there are totally 3 attempts for it in the consecutive years.
