English Literature definitely has an edge over philosophy for sure. An English Literature or Philosophy degree qualifies you for any number of careers that have no specific skill set. Basically, it is a degree that assures potential. For instance, many people think you must have a degree to do job, but most entry-level jobs have such a steep learning curve that the need for a specific degree is obviated. Lots of English and Liberal Arts Major are doing jobs in marketing, communications, sales, etc.

Philosophy is the ability of the mind to put things in perspective. It's the ability to differentiate between nuances of similar thoughts. It's about ethics, it's about logic.
It's a very interesting and fascinating subject. The subjects that are taught at graduation level are Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Ethics, Logical reasoning, Problems in Philosophy, Philosophy of religion, etc. The names may change from university to university but contents are similar.
