If you take political science as your optional subject, you will study for this optional along with the prelims section thus saving time for other topics. This way you can integrate the UPSC prelims and mains preparation.
Even if you don't have political science as your background, you can easily comprehend and study this subject as it is not too technical. The concepts are general and anyone who reads newspapers on a regular basis would be able to understand and prepare for it.

Let me tell you that after BA, MA would be like an icing on the cake but you have other options like you can go for MBA, LLB and can also go for civil services like UPSC as you have mentioned that your elders asked you to pursue mass communication. Let me tell you that here comes the point of getting confused as students get confused. A student should either listen to what his/her elders say or do what they want. It is all about networking now. Browse university websites for their research activities, you have to check which university has research activities in your field. You have to write to the research supervisors of particular universities and share your research proposal with them, they will get back to you if they like what you wrote. Follow up rigorously.
