Though a master's degree might be beneficial for one's general qualifications and understanding of project management principles, it doesn't change the fundamental eligibility requirements set by PMI for PMP certification. Those holding a master's degree have to meet either of the two requirements: three years of project management experience with a four-year degree or five years of experience if a student has a secondary degree. So, even though it adds value to your knowledge bank, it will not work to get you out of the experience and educational requirements of PMP certification.

If your application is picked for an audit, PMI will ask for supporting documentation of the information contained in your application. This would include project descriptions, contact information about supervisors or clients, and proof of your project management education. Although the audit process is random, PMI ensures that all candidates meet the high standards set by PMI. Failure to give the auditor proper information or documentation may lead to disqualification for any PMI certification.

Project management experience refers to the time spent leading and directing projects. Candidates must document their experience across all five process groups outlined in the PMBOK® Guide: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and closing. This experience does not need to come from a formal project manager role; any involvement in these phases can qualify as project management experience. This experience needs to be detailed with specifics about tasks completed and hours worked on in the application.
