Sales jobs don't require a degree, but most employers do look for applicants who have a high school diploma. Having graduated high school, you'll have the reading, writing and mathematical skills useful for sales careers. Most of the skills can be learned on the job, but larger retailers do have sales training programs to familiarize new employees with their equipment, policies and procedures.

You might think that the popularity of internet shopping would negatively impact careers in sales. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that some sales have declined due to online sales, such as book stores, other sales areas continue to thrive, such as clothing stores and automobile sales. Typically strength or weakness in sales jobs is tied to the economy, but population also affects the demand for sales people. In 2012 there were 4,668,300 sales jobs in the U.S. with a 10 percent increase in those jobs by 2022.
