The University of Melbourne acceptance rate is 77%. This makes the admission criteria of the university rather non-selective suggesting that securing a seat at the University of Melbourne is not that hard. Indian students must meet all admission requirements at the uni to become eligible.

Stipend graduate assistantships, which provide a set stipend rather than hourly compensation, are awarded to certain students. International graduate students are allowed to work on campus without permit. However one needs to qualify for either Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) for off campus. Students are allowed to work part time (up to 20 hours per week) throughout  semester. Full time during breaks from school. Part-time coops and internships are encouraged by CPT. They are seen as valid professional experience. Graduate student assistantships are frequently seen as useful work experience.
