Before the All India Institute of Medical Science was established in 1956, it was the sole tertiary care hospital in Delhi. It started serving as a training and teaching hub for University of Delhi post-graduate students in 1962. The hospital and its teachers were part of University College of Medical Sciences from 1973 till 1990.Safdarjung Hospital is connected to Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), which was recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and founded by the Indian government in November 2001. VMMC is affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.

 VMMC is roughly 10 km from the New Delhi Railway Station and 16 km from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. It is located in Ansari Nagar, close to the AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi.

According to the NIRF 2021 Ranking, it is ranked 18th in the Medical category.

Admission criteria for B.Sc courses at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital depend on the following qualifications: -10+2, Physics, Chemistry with Biology and minimum 55% marks, in the aggregate of General Candidates and 50% marks for reserved category candidate.The primary objective of college is to provide education in the field of Nursing. Pass in 12th class of 10+2of CBSE with Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology provided that the candidate has passed in each subject separately.VMMC NEET Cutoff 2023 for AIQ MBBS Seats is 107 and 113 for Round 1 and Round 2, respectively for the General Category. For State-Quota, the opening and closing ranks for VMMC MBBS are 1532 and 1556.
