The Master of Philosophy is a postgraduate degree. In most cases, it is an advanced research degree with the prerequisites required for a Master of Philosophy degree making it the most advanced research degree before the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D. or D.Phil.). An M.Phil. is in most cases thesis-only, and is regarded as a senior or second Master's degree, standing between a taught Master's and a Ph.D. An M.Phil. may be awarded to graduate students after completing several years of original research, but before the defence of a dissertation, and can serve as a provisional enrollment for a Ph.D.

Admission in the majority of the programmes offered at colleges affiliated to Delhi University is on the basis of merit wherein the best-of-four percentage is calculated. Here, candidates can select marks scored by them in any four subjects in their Class XII exams and thereafter calculate the aggregate marks/percentage scored by them. If you have a strong profile and manage your finances you should at least try applying to a good university abroad. If you manage to get into IIT, NIT or BITS then you stick to India. You have to compare, go abroad if it's a reputed university.
