The eligibility for joining merchant navy is:
1. Passed class 12 with physics, chemistry and mathematics.
2. Candidates have to be unmarried and Indian citizens (male or female).
3. Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.
4. Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.
5. After clearing the test, there is an interview and a medical test.
6. You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment. The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.
There are some private institutes, which offer training for merchant navy as well. These institutes prepare students for jobs such as deck cadets and marine engineering jobs.
After class 12, you are eligible to study the following merchant navy courses:
1. B.Sc in nautical science.
2. BE in marine engineering.
3. BE in naval architecture and offshore engineering.
4. BE in petroleum engineering.
5. BE in mechanical engineering.
6. BE in harbour and ocean engineering.
7. BE in civil engineering.
