You can go for courses which are non-traditional and quiet popular these days like Fashion Designing, Interior designing, Mass Comm or journalism. There is nothing like which course is better for average students. It solely depends on your field of interest that which one you can do. There are several options in engineering otherwise you can go for courses like Mass Communication, Journalism, Fashion, Interior Designing. To become a software engineer you may opt for courses such as :
• Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science / Information Technology
• Bachelor of Science (hons.) in Software Engineering
• Master of Computer Applications
• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
• Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

If you want higher study in a particular subject, you can take that subject as hons. After BSc, you may persue Master's degree than PhD. You may go for lectureship after that.
