The Department of Atomic Energy and the University of Mumbai founded it in 2007. A five-year integrated MSc program in basic sciences is provided by CEBS, which combines undergraduate instruction with postgraduate study and research.

Students seeking admission to CEBS have to appear for a National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) that is conducted at a large number of centers in India. NEST is a common screening test for both CEBS and the sister organization, NISER, Bhubaneswar. Selected students are called for counseling and admission to CEBS.

The college witnessed the participation of top corporate giants like Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, ACTREC, Max Planck Society, Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (AEI), etc.
