Mechanical engineering are working in different department of refinery
below are the department and their role. Reliability department- its function is doing RCA, FMEA, IRRR, insuring mechanical availability of rotary equipment for trouble free operations of refinery. And most important part is condition monitoring that's include vibration analysis, lube oil analysis of rotary equipment. This profession is like doctor, but patience are machine. (Steam & gas turbine, compressor, reciprocating pump & compressor, Pump, mixture)
Maintenance Rotary -Role of this department is doing daily routine maintenance like preventive maintenance, oil top up / look listen feel round of rotay equipment, maintenance of any rotary equipment as per recommendation by reliability engineering. & major & minor run hour based overhauling. Maintenance static -this department take care of static equipment like heaters, column, vessels, pipe lines, filters, Stainer's, heat exchangers, Safety valve like PSV & PRV etc. , all the manually operated mechanical valve. There daily maintains & time based overhauling. Maintenance planning -They insure availability of all the spares required for any time of maintenance, man power required for job, payment of all the maintain job, CAPEX, OPEX of maintenance department & planning daily job that is to be done in refinery unit. Assist integrity -like reliability department they insure availability of all the static equipment, by measuring degradation of material by time, pipe thickness, insuring proper calibration/maintenance of static equipment. Insuring correct metallurgy using at correct atmosphere etc. Engineering-This department is basically a design department where ever a modification needed. Due to baesd on some critical observation or RCA or failure occurred or expansion of refinery, modification can be in a existing system or buying a new system. Project -Thererole is to set up new plants, that's include erection, commissioning of every equipment.

There's one thing I can absolutely say about mechanical engineering after practicing for almost 10 years now and getting licensed as a PE. It's needed now more than ever, and especially those that can build and work with their hands. It's true everything has a computer on it these days, but it really is becoming a lost art to understand how to take ideas and turn them into real objects that solve problems and that's exactly what MS can do.
Things like working with sheet metal, how to design parts for injection molding, what type of welding will be adequate for an assembly. It doesn't mean that you can ignore coding and electronics, these are also vital to success these days. All said and done if I could do it all over again, I would definitely choose to be a ME over anything else.
