English Entrance Exam

International students must be comfortable with rapid and idiomatic spoken English to be considered for Columbia University admission. Students can demonstrate that they are proficient in English by submitting the English proficiency test scores.

• Your home language is English.

• Your primary language of instruction at school has been English for the duration of your secondary school career.

• You earned one or more of the following subsection scores:

1. 700 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT

2. 29 or higher on the English or Reading sections of the ACT

Note: If candidates meet, one or more of the above criteria, then fulfilled Columbia's English language proficiency requirement. If they do not, then they need to take one of the following English Language Proficiency exams:

Strathclyde University accepts a number of English language tests as proof of proficiency in English. Below we have given the list of English exams accepted by the University of Strathclyde along with their standard score requirements.

• IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no individual band less than 5.5)
• Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic (UKVI or non-UKVI): 60 overall, with a minimum of 59 in each component
• TOEFL (ibt): 73 overall, with the following minimum scores in each component: Listening: 17 Reading: 18 Speaking: 20 Writing: 18
• Cambridge First Certificate of English (FCE): 169 overall, with a minimum of 162 in each component
• Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 169 overall, with a minimum of 162 in each component
• Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency: 169 overall, with a minimum of 162 in each component

All non-native speakers of English must demonstrate English language proficiency and are required to submit TOEFL (79), IELTS (6.0), Cambridge English B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (176), Duolingo (105), TOEFL Essential (9.0), PTE (53) scores, or ELS 112 level except citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Guyana, and English-speaking countries of Africa and West Indies.

Aspirants may waive the language score requirement if their secondary institution provides written verification that the means of instruction is in English, they are enrolled in an IB curriculum, attend American School or enrolled in a curriculum that leads to Cambridge International Examinations: IGCSE/O-level and GCE/A level exam.
