IHM Shimla admissions are primarily entrance-based. The institute selects candidates for BSc based on NCHMCT JEE score. The National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology Joint Entrance Exam (NCHMCT JEE) is a national-level hospitality entrance exam for admission to BSc (Hospitality & Hotel Administration). Admission to the MSc course is through NCHMCT MSc JEE score. For other programmes, the merit of the candidates in the last qualifying exam is considered for selection.

Candidates need to fulfil the merit requriements to get a seat in HGPI. The institute accepts national or state-level entrance exams such as JEE Main, HPCET, HPU MAT, CAT, MAT, etc. for admission to a few courses. For most of the courses, selection is merit-based. The institute also fills some seats through the Management Quota. Selected candidates need to pay course fee to confirm their seat in the institute.
