The IELTS syllabus test your skills in four main areas – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Listening and Speaking parts are same for both Academic and General Training types. But the Reading and Writing sections are different depending on which version you take.

The Listening is 30 minutes. Reading and Writing are exactly 60 minutes each without any break. The Speaking is very fast, it takes only 11 to 14 minutes to finish.

IELTS Academic Sections

Section Description

IELTS Listening Section

Test takers will have to listen to recorded texts and answer questions accordingly. On this section, there are:

  • 4 recorded texts

  • 40 questions 

IELTS Reading Section

Test takers would be given lengthy passages to read and answer corresponding questions. There are:

  • 3 passages

  • 40 questions

IELTS Writing Section

Candidates would be required to attempt two tasks addressing topics of broad relevance:

  • Writing Task 1 (150 words)

  • Writing Task 2 (250 words)

IELTS Speaking Section

Divided into 3 parts, the Speaking Section will require the candidates to:

  • Answer general questions about themselves

  • Talk on a particular topic on cue cards and,

  • Answer questions connected to Part 2.

In the IELTS Speaking test there is a face-to-face interview between the test taker and the examiner. The Speaking test includes 3 parts which are mentioned above. Here, candidates are assessed on the following parameters:

  • Grammar
  • Pronunciation
  • Lexical resource
  • Fluency

The Speaking test is recorded and marked based on the applicant's performance. Applicants should be careful how they attempt this section.

In order to score band 8.0 on IELTS in the Writing section is by:

  • By reading regularly and building a good vocabulary.
  • Read books, newspapers, journals and other material helpful for acing the IELTS Writing section. 
  • Time each question, assess the requirements and then attempt the question.
  • Ensure that there is a logical flow of information and there is coherence in writing.
  • Avoid grammatical or spelling mistakes, recheck what is written.
  • Choose the right kind of words and be precise with your writing tasks.
  • Apprach each Task based on the requirement, avoid using non-popular or offensive opinions and be neutral with the responses.
