For eligibility to the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), candidates must have scored a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination.

This aggregate is calculated based on the marks obtained in all subjects, including English and Hindi. Therefore, to meet the eligibility criteria, you need to have an overall aggregate of 60% across all subjects in your Class XII examination.

IISERs and IITs are both excellent institutions, but they have different focuses:

IISERs:
Primarily focus on fundamental Science research. It also offers a strong foundation in basic sciences like physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. The IISER entrance exam, also called IISER Aptitude Test, tests candidates in three main sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology. The syllabus is based on the NCERT curriculum of classes 11 and 12, with a focus on topics such as Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrostatics, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Calculus, Algebra, and Biology (for students applying through the Biology stream). It is a multiple-choice test consisting of 60 questions. Each question carries one mark, and there is no negative marking. The test is usually taken online and lasts for 3 hours.

With a rank of 4174, getting a seat in any IISER might be tough, but it's not impossible. The cutoff ranks change every year based on things like how many people apply and how many seats are available. 'For example, in recent years, the cutoff for the general category has been between 1000 and 5000. To improve your chances, you can look up the specific cutoff for each IISER this year. You might also consider applying through JEE Advanced or KVPY, as some IISERs accept students through these exams too. Make sure to check the official IISER admission website for the latest updates.

Preparation based on the syllabus of NEET will prove helpful as a foundation especially in Biology and to some extent, Physics and Chemistry. Mathematics is included in IAT that is not part of NEET syllabus. Analytical thinking and problem solving ability will be tested through IAT, which is comparatively at a higher level than that in NEET. Therefore, while NEET preparation helps you with some subjects, you need to devote extra time for Mathematics and the different question formats of IAT.
