One way is by applying for Indian Academy Of Sciences Summer Research Fellowship. Happens every year, applications begin to roll out some time in September-October.
You get to pick a Professor as a mentor in any field. These professors are from many IITs ,IISc and even ISER They even provide students with stipend. Check OutIndian Academy of Sciences
Another way is by contacting professors through e-mail and asking for internships under them. This is way harder to get compared to the first one unless you really have done some amazing work before and provided the profs are interested.

Hi Naren,
IITs have global recognition so you can go for it, but if the foreign university concerned is MIT, Caltech, etc., then go for this choice. You have to compare them likewise. It depends on which university abroad you have gotten through because as mentioned IITians are allowed everywhere.

IITs offer multiple short term courses and advertise their eligibilty criteria. Courses are open for all those candidates who meet eligiblity criteria defined by IITs. They need not be IIT students.
