There is no regulated minimum fee, or one set by any directors' union or guild. Directors have great access to producers and can negotiate. They will go down for a high risk project or agree for a profit share if they really care about a movie. A handful of directors can ask for premium fees based on say two big hits. This figure can be 15% of the last movie's box office collections, and negotiated for keeping remake rights for themselves, etc. Newbies cannot hope to get paid more than two or three percent of the budget, which in the hands of a smart director can swell without increasing the actual pay from the budget, if he or she knows how to negotiate based on the movie's performance. The ones making fancy salaries are celebrity directors who have built their reputations over many years.
