Your son's score of 96.85 percentile is quite impressive! The cutoff for Computer Science (CSE) depends on the specific college and entrance exam he appeared for (e.g., JEE Main, MHT CET, KCET, etc.).
To give a general idea:
Top NITs & IIITs (via JEE Main): Cutoffs for CSE typically range from 98-99+ percentile in JEE Main.
State Engineering Colleges (via MHT CET, KCET, etc.):
In Maharashtra (MHT CET), top colleges like COEP, VJTI require 99+ percentile, but some good private colleges accept 96-98 percentile.
In Karnataka (KCET), colleges like RVCE, BMSCE have cutoffs around 97-99 percentile for CSE.
Private Universities (SRM, Manipal, etc.)

With an EWS rank of 8,100 in JEE Main, getting top NITs may be difficult, but you can get branches in newer or lower-ranked NITs. In 2024, NIT Srinagar had closing ranks of 47,482 (Mechanical) and 55,447 (Metallurgical) for EWS. Cutoffs change yearly based on applicants, difficulty, and seats. Participating in JoSAA counseling and checking state-level options is recommended. For exact predictions, refer to last year's cutoff trends on official websites.

Avantika University considers JEE Main scores for admission to BTech programmes. However, it not compulsory to have a JEE Main score for admission. Aspirants with a valid score in CUET or any other state-level entrance exam can also get admission. Besides, the university also conducts AST or Avantika Scholastic Test for BTech admission. Aspirants with JEE Main score are open to some of the BTech scholarships offered by the university.
