The JEST 2026 exam is expected to have a moderate to difficult level. Questions usually test deep conceptual understanding in physics or related subjects, focusing more on analytical and problem-solving skills than on rote memorization.

A good score in JEST is usually above 30–35 marks, which can place candidates in the top 10–15 percentile. However, cutoff scores vary by institute and subject top institutes like IISc or TIFR may require higher scores around 40+ marks.

There are various premier research institutes and universities in India that accept JEST scores for admissions purposes. Each institute has its own eligibility and selection criteria for the exam takers. So, it is advisable for all the applicants to go through the eligibility criteria of the institute if they wish to get admission so that they exactly know whether they are eligible to appear for the exam or not.

The JEST 2024 exam had three parts - A, B and C.

The JEST scores will be calculated as follows-

  • There were 25 questions in part A, which carry 1 mark for the correct answer and 1/3 mark will be deducted for the negative answer.

  • There were 15 questions for part B, it will carry 3 marks for the correct answer and 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

  • For part C, there will be no negative marking as questions were descriptive in nature and 3 marks will be rewarded for every correct answer.

Authorities will calculate the score of applicants on the basis of questions attempted by the applicants.

Applicants who are appearing in JEST exam are often curious about the validity period of the JEST score. The JEST exam score validity is for one year hence applicants who want to take admission in any of the JEST participating institutes can apply online the same year. After the completion of one year of validity of JEST score applicants need to again appear in exam and their previous year score will be null and void.
