Hi, I think a lot of people can resonate with your case.
Firstly, there is no stopping you to take up Journalism. If you dread the technical part of engineering, then take up less technical work in technical writing or training and development in organisations that can offer you jobs because of the degree you have earned and your interest in skills outside of technical too. Yes, it is useful to give competitive exams like UPSC, MPSC, or any other competitive exam.
You can opt for any course for your UG programme, as the field of education does not really matter, when you apply for a UPSC exam. What matters is that, you should be a graduate and how you perform in the exam. To prepare for the exam, refer to class 9th to class 12th NCERT books of Geography, History and Civics. Read at least 2 newspapers daily, and join the mock test series in order to clear the exam.

If you are working in the field of journalism and you want to enhance your knowledge base, then it is beneficial only when you can have opportunities to apply that knowledge. Journalism is a practical field and any sort of distance programme will be of limited help, if you are not getting any opportunities to apply that knowledge.

BA (Hons.) Journalism is a 3-year full-time undergraduate journalism course, minimum eligibility for which is 10+2 or an equivalent examination in Science stream with 55% marks from a recognised board. Most of the colleges offer BA (Hons.) Journalism course in various states of India.
