It is also imperative to be a top scorer since it is the most sought after NLU.
Do self-study or join a coaching class.
Preparation time is based on personal aptitude, may vary from 1-year to a 1-month crash course.

In my personal opinion, it does not make sense to drop a year for CLAT.

For admission to NLUs (except NLU Delhi) - CLAT, NLU Delhi - AILET, for most Maharashtra colleges like ILS and GLC - MHTCET and for Symbiosis (all branches) - SET.

The difficulty level depends on the student aptitude and preparation of the individual student. Clearing SET is not an issue, clearing the PI after getting shortlisted is a task.

AILET exam is conducted every year for admission in NLU-Delhi but CLAt exam is conducted for admission in all NLUs and also through CLAT you can also get admissions in various other private colleges like Narsee Monjee, Amity, etc.
