Well, yes. You can study an MTech degree in a different branch than your BTech, given you meet the minimum eligibility requirements and pass the GATE exam in the relevant discipline. Several top colleges prefer you to have done your BTech at least in a related branch, while others follow a more flexible approach.
Interestingly, recently IIT Delhi has introduced cross-branch M.Tech options in the 3rd year of your BTech degree, where you can choose to pursue M.Tech in any specialisation in the third year of your BTech course and graduate with a dual degree at the end of 5 years.

There is no such necessity to take coaching to clear the GATE exam for admission to MTech courses; you can get excellent marks and rank through dedicated effort and self-study. Basically, it depends on your learning style, dedication towards clearing the exam, and passion to pursue MTech.
Having said that, coaching can definitely add value because of the structured learning approach followed there, along with expert knowledge and guidance and access to study material that can turn out to be very helpful.

Coming to the private colleges, you can consider VIT Vellore, BITS Pilani, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, LPU, Chandigarh University, and Thapar University.

On the official website of the university, it is not mentioned anywhere that KAU only accepts ICAR AIEEA PG scores for admission to the M.Tech course. There are chances that the university might consider the scores of the university's in-house entrance exams for admission to the M.Tech course.
