Admission to the PhD course at NIT Sikkim is primarily based on the candidate's performance in a national-level entrance exam such as GATE, UGC NET or UGC CSIR. These exams are conducted annually to evaluate the aptitude and knowledge of candidates who are seeking admission to various postgraduate and research programmes.

The basic eligibility to apply to the PhD course is a PG degree in the relevant stream with a 60% aggregate or 6.5 CGPA in BTech/ Mtech from any recognised university or 85% in BTech from any NIT/ IIT/ IIIT/ Other CFTIs. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, a relaxation of 5% marks or 0.5 CGPA will be considered. Further, the selection procedure includes appearing for the Institute based entrance exam and personal interview.

Yes, there is an M.Tech programme offered at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Sikkim. The institute offers M.Tech in three specialisations: Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Communication Engineering and Control Power and Electric Drives. BTech programme at NIT Sikkim is offered in  specialisations namely Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering & Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The eligibility criteria for the BTech specialisations includes twelve years of shcool education with 75% aggregate. National entrance exams is the source of admission for the BTech programme.
