NIT

Well even with 27K rank, it is certainly possible that you'll just make it into some of the NITs. If you apply for home state quote, I guess you'll certainly qualify for some branches that are less in demand such as textile, food processing, integrated M.Sc material science and metallurgy, etc. However, if you really want to bag that NIT tag with a good branch, you'll have to rely on the northeastern and new NITs like Silchar, Meghalaya, Agartala, Sikkim, etc. As their general cut-offs are also way too low. So, it's your decision to go for some better NIT with your home state quota or you can opt for North Eastern NITs or even other government institutions with your desired seat.

I doubt if your son will get a good NIT with these marks. In case he does't get a good college on the basis of this rank, then he can opt for some of the good private universities like LPU, SRM, VIT, etc., offering various specializations in B.Tech. They have their different criteria for admissions. Some offer admission on basis of JEE scores, some offer admission on basis of their own tests and some offer admission on the basis of both. Some even offer direct admission on basis of your marks in class 12th. Some of the universities also offer scholarships on basis of your performance in class 12th or JEE or even during the course. All these universities offer world class learning atmosphere to students along with good placements.
