Devoting two full years for competitive exam preparation has its own merits and demerits. It is worth try option if you want to become an engineer from IIT only. If you succeed then you do not lose much but failure will lead to two productive years wastage / loss.

From next year, there will be no weightage for the board marks and 150-170 marks will be low to get into top NITs. You should aim for above 190 to get into top NITs.

Candidates with 60% marks (6.5/10 CGPA) in Bachelors degree of full time 3 years duration from a recognized university with mathematics / statistics / business mathematics as one of the subjects in any one semester/year, both in graduation and at class 12th are eligible.
For SC/ST candidates the percentage of marks required is 55% (6.0/10 CGPA). Those candidates who are appearing for the qualifying examinations are also eligible to appear for the test. You have to qualify IIT JEE exam to take admission in B.Tech. However, there are many state universities/colleges/private universities which offer lateral entry to second year B.Tech students.
