In India, the cost of training is between 25 to 40 Lacs. In US, it costs around 25 to 30 Lacs all included.
For Airline job, you have to further do a type rating which costs an additional 16-24 lacs. (I did TR after getting the job, but I had to pay for it)
So, yes it is expensive. Job opportunities come up with time but are very limited and highly competitive. There are about 100 airline openings for freshers a year in India and there are already 6000+ unemployed CPL holders with around 500+ type rated guys. You must complete class XII under the 10+2 system or its equivalent with a minimum of 50 per cent marks in maths and physics. You must be at least 16 years of age to be eligible for a Student Pilot License, 17 for a Private Pilot License, and 18 for a Commercial Pilot License.
To become a pilot you need a Bachelor's degree in aircraft operations, aviation, aeronautical engineering, or a related field. In addition, you will complete up to two months of ground training and need more than 1,500 hours of flight experience.

To become a commercial pilot:
1. You need to first possess a student pilot license. You must be over 17 years of age and have completed 12th in Science (Physics and mathematics) with 50%.
2. Your vision in one eye must be perfect. In general medical terminology, it is called 6/6 eyesight. In the other eye, you could have an imperfection of 6/9, which must be correctable to 6/6.
3. General physical fitness is mandatory. You must be free of any disease that can hamper normal function.
4. You need to register at a flying club which is recognised by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India.

Pilot training (commercial pilot license):
Duration: 1 year (approx.)
Eligibility:
10+2 or its equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks in mathematics and physics. If you don't have physics and maths in 10+2 you have an option of doing these two subjects from National Institute of Open Schoolings On-Demand Examinations and can still start your Pilot training course. DGCA is an Indian govt. the regulatory body, and has no authority over any course taught outside of India. However, some pilot training colleges may claim that their course is approved by DGCA, which is technically a marketing strategy. Here is how -
DGCA requires you to have completed a certain number of flight hours during the course, along with certain licenses and ratings. After you gain these, you can convert your licenses and ratings upon return to India.
