Yes, CGPA and academic will be counted on. But, it will not dominate the placements. The most important thing a recruiter would see is if the candidate has practical knowledge about the subject. To make it to the job during your placements try doing internships and other short time courses in marketing which sets your resume apart and shows that you have skills relevant to the subject which increases your selection process with the company. Do attempt publishing research papers and be academically active in the campus and ensure you make the most use of every Resource provided to you during your study time in the campus.

GAPS are a problem during admission in a B School or during the placement only if the gaps cannot be justified means you don't have a valid view point to support it.
