Purdue University was founded in 1869 under the Morill Act of 1862. It is a public land-grant research university and the flagship of the Purdue University System. Finally, in 1869, the Indiana General Assembly chose the Lafayette area for the new institution. This university was founded after Lafayette businessman John Purdue donated land and money to establish a College of Science, Technology and Agriculture. Yes, Purdue University can be considered a Division 1 school. A few of the athletic teams of the university are pertaining to the sports football, basketball, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, volleyball, etc. There are 18 NCAA Division I/I-A NCAA teams. Also, if students are competitive athlete, they can check out the 30+ club sports. Also, students can utilize the recreation center for all things related to wellness and recreation.
