The difficulty of PLAB and USMLE can vary depending on individual circumstances. Some students find PLAB more challenging due to its unique format and emphasis on clinical application, while others find USMLE more difficult due to its breadth of content and competitive nature. Ultimately, the best way to determine which exam is more difficult for you is to assess your own strengths and weaknesses.

USMLE is not valid in India to directly practice as a doctor. Even if you pass USMLE, you cannot work in India unless you also clear NEXT or other Indian medical exams. But if you finish your residency in the USA, you can come back and work in India after registering with the NMC (National Medical Commission). So USMLE is for the USA, not a replacement for NEET PG or FMGE in India.

Yes, many students feel USMLE is tough, because it's not just about studying, it's about understanding deeply and solving case-based questions. The syllabus is big, and you need to study smart and long-term. But if you follow a good study plan and practice properly, you can crack it. It's hard, but not impossible.

Yes, you can give USMLE after MBBS. In fact, many students start preparing for it during MBBS or internship. Once you finish MBBS from a recognised medical college, you can apply for the exam. So yes, after MBBS is a good time to give USMLE if you want to go to the USA for PG.

USMLE is a bit expensive for Indian students.

  • Step 1 and Step 2 CK each cost around USD 1,060 to USD 1,100
  • You also pay around USD 180 extra for taking it at a Prometric center in India
  • There is also an ECFMG fee of around USD 160

So in total, it comes to around INR 2.5 to INR 3 lakhs, depending on the dollar rate.

Yes, many students say that USMLE is harder than NEET, especially for Indian students. NEET mostly checks your memory and basic understanding. But USMLE is more about concepts, clinical thinking, and applying knowledge in real-life patient cases. Also, it is in English, and the question style is different. So, yes, it feels more tough, but it's not impossible.

If you are a medical student or already finished your MBBS from a college that is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, then you are eligible for USMLE. Your college must also be approved by ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). So if you are doing MBBS in India from a recognised college, you can apply.

If you do not plan to practice medicine in India, then you do not need to take the FMGE. The FMGE is mandatory for Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who wish to obtain a license to practice medicine in India after completing their medical education abroad. Regarding the USMLE, if you pass all the steps of the USMLE that are required and you get your medical license in the United States, you are exempt from taking the FMGE for practising in India. However, if you do plan to practice in India at any point, you will still need to fulfil the FMGE requirement unless you hold a medical qualification recognised by the Natio
