Yes, you can do projects here. There are many clubs and technical societies that do such kind of projects: ANANT working on satellite, ACYUT and Robocon working on robotics, BAJA designing and making sports car.

GATE STIPEND:
This stipend is given to after you have passed out of the course.
Under teaching assistant ship:
BITS stipend or fee waiver or both as BITS stipend & fee waiver.
Under both conditions, you have to give extra hours in teaching assistantship and you are not eligible for GATE stipend.
So, answer to your question is yes, in case you do not opt for both the options in teaching assistantship.

BITS Pilani is one of the premier engineering institute as well as top private university of India. The admissions to various courses available here are done purely on Merit. So, to answer your query there is no way you can get direct admission in BITS Pilani in any of the courses without any entrance exam.

Hi Tanuj, Design Engineering is not the same as machine design. The former is a more persuasive domain where the design of systems, processes, and parts are done in diverse fields, whereas the latter is more specific and niche into mechanical machine components. BITS Pilani offers only M.E in Design Engineering as a regular higher degree course. However, you can take certain electives of Machine Design if you want. Your question is incomplete, as you haven't mentioned about the stream of engineering for the placement comparison. It is quite an important factor as the Institute's placement varies according them. However, if BE in Computer Science & Engineering is considered, the comparison can be like
BITS>Manipal University>VIT>UPES>SRM>KIIT.
