You to write one of the competitive exams like CAT/XAT/MAT. You should satisfy the criteria of minimum percentile and apply within 1 year of the competitive exam. Then you will have a WT/GD and PI after they short list you.

When it comes to mechanical, MIT is really good. There are well equipped labs, good library, good infrastructure, learned professors, a lot of student projects which are funded by the college upto a certain extend( there's no funding in VIT).
