Tell him whatever he is studying, make short notes so that in final exam he has to only read the notes. Don't get panic.

Cutoff usually change with year don't focus much on that, it's usually under 500. Focus on giving your best try for now later there will be sufficient time for you to search your options and get best out of it.
All the best.

Dear,
With these marks, you are not eligible for JEE Advanced. You can get a seat in IIT-Madras if you have a good rank in JEE Advanced.

The admissions for even the undergraduate courses in Tamil Nadu or not based on any entrance exam. The admissions are given based on the marks obtained in the 12th exam by a student. Of course, there is a minimum percentage of marks prescribed but it is so low that almost every student will clear this minimum requirement, in the similar fashion the lateral admission in the second year of engineering based on diploma are also done not based on any entrance test but based on the marks obtained in diploma. Here also there is a certain minimum percentage of marks is prescribed but again it is so low that everybody will have scored this marks. Hence, do not worry of scoring below 75% and not being eligible for admission.
