IITM applications are invited online only. Each programme has a separate process for admission. BS admission is carried out through the institute's website itself. An application will be accepted only after fee payment is completed. After fee payment, students have to fill in the details and upload documents. IIT Madras course admissions are fully entrance-based. The institute has the following selection criteria for popular programmes:

IIT Madras Seat Reservation Criteria 2026
Indian nationals belonging to certain categories are admitted under the seats reserved for them in accordance with the rules prescribed by the Government of India. The IIT Madras seat categories and the extent of reservation are given below:
