No, it is not mandatory, but yes, if you have experience then you are seen separately from the crowd. You do not need to have the work experience for CAT.
All the best.

For Creative Ability Test CAT, try making different sceneries. For example, a scene of community festival, a cobbler at workplace, traffic jam etc. Make yourself perfect in drawing human figures. Practice poster making. Don't practice with water colors, because they aren't allowed there. Also get some knowledge about the color schemes, like which color depicts which emotion. You should buy a reference book, there are many books available in the market. Practice all of it's question papers. The CAT exam is of 3 hours in which 34 questions are asked, so practice the questions in the time limit.

Before you appear for CAT, you need to decide on your interest areas and career aspirations, as CAT is an entrance exam for seeking admission into MBA. In case you intend to pursue a career in Technical / Research /Academics area then a Masters course in your Graduation level course will be a better option. However if you want to move into general management the MBA is suitable. As a pre-qualifying standard you need to ensure that you score more than 50% marks at graduation level for admission into MBA. The open test of CAT happens in November / December and most students appear for it during their final gear of graduation course.

I believe in depending on one book and practicing it entirely. This helps in the methodical flow of preparation with respect to all the sections of CAT. You can't calculate that on your own. It is based on how many people scored more than you, lesser than you and the total applicants.
