Placement for mechanical engineering in CUSAT is just like any other branch. By this I mean, you will get TCS, Accenture, Cognizant, etc. By now, you may have understood the difference between placement in a core company and just any placement. Sorry to say, but placement from mechanical in the core company is the worst among all branches of CUSAT. I'm not sure whether this trend is followed in all the colleges or not, but surely you will find it very difficult to get into a company where you can hone your mechanical skill set if you're expecting it through on-campus placement.
PS: I had been in touch with friends, seniors and juniors of almost all the batches only till 2017. All the information is based on my experience of 2011-2017.

Talking About 2018-2019 Placements:
I will be more specific about Computer Science. Also, will have light on Non-Core Branches. The decent Average placement is INR. 4.82 lacs. The institute has got almost 100% placements for Computer Science and engineering and the highest package is INR. 12.23 lacs,Job opportunities are fairly good. According to the placement officer C. V Premkumar around 48 organizations have already visited the campus for placement drive which includes Indian Oil Corporation (Maharatna Company), Bharat Petroleum & Oil India (Navaratna Companies), Reliance Industries, Unisys, Verizon, Amazon, Maxeed Telecom, JWL, IOTL, MusigmaBut when we talk about core branch then placement is quite low but this year mechanical students were getting good placement. Companies which came last year are Ceat, Realiance, ONGC, gale, TCS, infoysis etc. Some ratings based on the survey:

Academics - 8/10
Infra and Fooding - 7/10
Social Life - 9/10
Placement - 8/10
So, on an average college is good when we come to CSE.

CUSAT M.Tech Admission 2019- Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has released the online application for CUSAT CAT 2019 on January 30. The last date to fill the online application form of CUSAT M.Tech 2019 has been extended to April 21 (without late fee). However, the candidates can submit the application form with late fee till April 30, 2019. It is important that they first check the complete eligibility criteria of CUSAT M.Tech admission 2019 and then only proceed to fill the application form. The authorities will conduct M.Tech admission for both GATE qualified and non-GATE candidates. The authorities will consider GATE scores of candidates for CUSAT M.Tech admission 2019, however, non-GATE candidates will have to appear in Department Admission Test (that) conducted by the department concerned. It will be conducted only if the sufficient number of GATE candidates are not available. The rank list of CUSAT M.Tech admission 2019 will be prepared by the authorities on the basis of GATE scores of the candidates. However, candidates without GATE scores will be considered for CUSAT M.Tech 2019 admission only if sufficient number of candidates with valid GATE scores are not available. If you are looking at doing Masters or PG, CUSAT is definitely better that CET. I work very closely with Academics and personally believe that academic freedom to design courseware for the quality of their students is something that is needed to impart good quality education. CUSAT has this with some very well educated professors who are dedicated to train students well. The govt is also pumping money to improve the facilities here. In case of CET, it is tied to the KTU syllabus, under which even the worst colleges in Kerala will be affiliated to. As a student, you will be offered the same course in CET which will be offered to those type of colleges.
Also, with CET, your Prof might just get transferred by the government, which will never happen with CUSAT. This should be a major add on point for CUSAT.
Having said, all of this, if you are looking at B.Tech, when I took admission is 2010, CET was better than CUSAT School of Engineering(which offers the Bachelors courses), both in terms of placements and quality of education; there are a lot of contract faculties in CUSAT SOE. With the KTU structure into place, I am sure CUSAT SOE will definitely improve in the coming years and whereas CETs quality will come down, if it doesn't become autonomous.
