Broadly, both are primary autonomous healthcare professions, both provide diagnostic decision making and management of patient problems, and both have significant patient interaction. Academically both professions have long and rigorous training courses with the expectation of continuing practice development throughout the practitioner's career. With respect to career prospects, upon qualification both professions allow the degree holder to proceed to primary care practice, specialist training and practice and specialist hospital practice.
