Coding can be a great skill for all designers. It is not a strict or mandatory requirement.
Many UI UX roles also involve creating wireframes, prototypes, and visual designs using tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD. In these, programming knowledge is not exactly required.
But having knowledge of coding can be very much useful when working with the developers.

Yes, you could do an M.Des, after doing an M.Sc. in Chemistry. Quite a few design programs accept people from diverse backgrounds, be it science. Admission is usually based on a bachelor's degree with minimum percentage in the case of most colleges, close to 50%, and would include qualifying exams like the DAT or CEED Common Entrance Examination for Design). Some institutions also hold interviews for the evaluation of your potential for the program. Please check with the specific institutions you are interested in as some requirements vary considerably.
