Both these branches, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering are based on the concepts of physics only. Mechanical deals with kinetics, thermodynamics, etc. while electrical deals with AC current and its applications.
So, you really need to know the basics very well and have good solving skills with conceptual clarity.

No, it's electrical in CUSAT because it is going to become IIEST this year and IEM stands nowhere.

No there is no such rules for distance diploma in engineering, you have to go for full time diploma in engineering.

6th sem is preferred to go for industrial training because till then you're ready to learn those core concepts which are used in the firm and could co-relate well.

It is a decent college but not so good. Companies come for placement but do not expect much, you will only get the regular package as most of them are the "Mass Recruiters" and they give the same package to everyone.
