Core courses are mandatory for graduation whereas electives can be in most any subject but have to be in a certain number of fields (English, Math, Science, Arts, etc.). Electives are just that, can be taken or not taken ,but a certain number of electives are required.

My suggestion would be to read as much as you can, be it books, novels, articles, anything. Watch movies, news.Try to converse in English as much as you can.
Buy Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis. It is brilliant book that helps you build a strong vocab.
