The GATE signature guidelines and specifications are as follows -

  • The image must be in JPEG or JPG format and signed in black or dark blue color ink.
  • The file size of the signature must be a minimum of 3 kb and maximum of 300 Kb. 
  • The maximum pixel resolution is 580 x 180 pixels, and the minimum resolution is 250 x 80 pixels.

Candidates can choose upto three exam cities/centers while filling the GATE 2026 application form. The exam city preference must be from the same zone itself. This year, the GATE 2026 exam is being conducted in more than 200 cities across eight zones.

The GATE photograph must be uploaded as per the following specifications -

  • The photo must be of good quality, following the size criterion (3.5 cm width x 4.5 cm height)
  • The background of the photo must be white
  • Must be in JPEG/JPG format with a minimum aspect ratio of 0.66 and a maximum aspect ratio of 0.89.
  • The maximum pixel resolution must be 530 x 690 pixels, and the minimum resolution must be 200 x 260 pixels.
  • The minimum file size must be 5 KB, and the maximum must be 600 KB.

The GATE exam (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is conducted for 30 test papers. The GATE papers are defined by the specific paper codes which is mentioned in the GATE 2026 information brochure, as well as in the application form. Candidates must check the paper codes and include them properly.

To add a new paper (secondary paper), visit the GATE application form and log in using the credentials. After logging in, select the edit option and make the required changes. Pay the additional fee and submit the application form. Incase, you've submitted the application form and want to change, that facility will be available during the correction process.

OBC-NCL and EWS category need not submit any category certificate while filling the GATE application form. All candidates have to submit the following -

  • Photograph and signature (as per specifications)
  • Valid photo ID (such as Aadhar card, PAN Card, Voter ID, etc.)
  • Foreign nationals have to upload, either a Driving License or passport (in the valid ID section)

Category candidates must upload their caste certificate, and PwD/Dyslexic candidates must submit their medical (PwD or dyslexic certificate) to avail compensatory time.

Candidates can change the following details during the GATE 2026 form correction process -

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Choice of exam cities
  • Change in existing cities
  • Adding a second paper
  • Gender change
  • Change in category, etc. 

Candidates who want to modify their application form have to pay a specific amount through netbanking/credit card/debit card, etc. Last year, the fee for each change was INR 500 per particular.

The different GATE 2026 application statuses are as follows -

  • Received - this means that your application form has been received.
  • Under scrutiny - this means that your application form is under review. 
  • Accepted - this means that your application form has been accepted by the GATE authorities.
  • Defect status - this means that some particulars are incorrect and must be corrected within the stipulated time. 
  • Status after rectification - this states your application status after submitting the rectified details. 
  • Rejected - means that your GATE application form is rejected for a valid reason.
